2009 is smelling like chocolate

What resolutions did the Wenches make for 2009? Only one:

P1010395

EAT MORE CHOCOLATE!!!

Okay, okay. I'm not really serious about this being our 2009 resolution. But a chocolate recipe does follow. So all those of you who made resolutions involving diets, dieting, and weight loss for 2009 should probably stop reading right now and click away to a different blog.

This year we started what I hope will become a New Year's tradition at our house. On the first morning of 2009, Wing Nut made chocolate waffles for breakfast. Yes, I did write waffles and chocolate together. The intoxicating perfume of chocolate lingered throughout the house for hours after breakfast. We topped our waffles with baked pears and a sprinkle of cardamom.

DOUBLE CHOCOLATE WAFFLES

  • 1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa, preferably Dutch processed
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 cups reduced fat milk
  • 6 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet mini chocolate morsels

Place all the ingredients except the chocolate morsels in a large bowl and combine until well blended and smooth. Let batter sit 5 minutes before using.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your waffle maker regarding preheating and cooking. Once you've poured the batter sprinkle chocolate morsels over each waffle and let batter bubble a few seconds before closing the cover of the waffle maker.

Makes twelve 4-inch waffles. A serving is one waffle.

Nutritional Analysis per serving: Calories 265 (39% from fat), carbs 37 g, protein 5 g, fat 12 g, sat. fat 3 g, cholesterol 38 mg, sodium 187 mg, calcium 62 mg, fiber 3 g

*This recipe is from the instruction booklet that came with our waffle maker.

Here's wishing you a great smelling 2009!

Oh that is just cruel! Actually, I didn't make any food-related resolutions, I just don't have a waffle-maker. I can almost smell them... sorry only one of the W's can make it on 2/7, but maybe both for next time, if there is one!

Hi Karen! I love the aroma of these waffles. We make them a couple of times a year on very special occasions. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my training will be cancelled and I'll be able to join the gathering.

Thanks Yolanda! Same to you for 2009!

I agree Daphne! That is one easy to keep resolution.

OMG Andrea, that sounds awesome. Happy Birthday to your daughter!

I haven't got a waffle iron either - I've got to make do with Nutella on toast.
Your recipe sounds wonderful, especially for breakfast. The pears add that healthy touch!

Greetings easygardener. When I first encountered Nutella on bread I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

Wenches .. I love Nutella .. I can't have it in the house though because .. I EAT IT !! LOL
I have made a very important discovery (please keep it a secret ?) .. I hardly ate any chocolate during Xmas because .. now I mean this is secret .. I got hooked on honey dates .. they come in a plastic bucket .. I can't tell you how strange this is for me .. I have been a chocolate addict all my life .. but some how these natural fruits ? have turned me off that and on to IT !! They are actually healthy too .. I just can't believe I'm saying this .. but now I am HOOKED on them .. how the H*** do I get off of them ????
If I was still into chocolate .. the waffles would have me : )

Waffles??!! Imagine that! My favorite growing up was chocolate chip pancakes with strawberry syrup! And whipped cream! I think I just gained 3 pounds typing that. Now it is chocolate chip waffles every Sunday morning and you two are thought of often!!

Chocolate is a food group! Even my mother says so!

One day during the Snowpocalypse while I was playing home health aide after my mom's surgery, I skated across to the grocery for a few items, Of course some chocolate found its way into my cart. I laughed very hard when I got back to Mom's and she thought that was a pretty important addition.

HAPPY NEW YEAR and plenty of chocolate to all.

Psst, to all the people who do not have waffle irons, you could do what I do and find someone who does and who will let you invite yourselves over to brunch or supper.

One year the wenches gave chocolate waffles to selected local groupies for Christmas. I can attest that chocolate waffles are almost as heavenly popped into the toaster (or microwave, though crispier if toasted) to reheat as they are fresh off the griddle. This recipe makes 12 waffles and freezes wonderfully.

I love dates GardenJoy! While I was growing up they were really hard to find in DE. At Christmas time my dad would drive 2 hrs to northern NJ where there is a big Cuban community and lots of Hispanic/Latino markets and he'd buy dates and figs. So I still associate dates and figs with Christmas. But I have to say that figs are my current passion. We bought a little fig tree this fall. Haven't had the heart to check and see if she, Violetta, made it through the recent snowpocalypse.

HA! I gained 2 lbs just reading that, Diane! I know we said it before, but THANK YOU SO MUCH for the waffle maker! We love, love, love it! We too always think of you and the rest of the gang in NE whenever we make waffles. Thanks so much for leaving a comment!

We've said it before, RantWoman, we LOVE your mom! She is way cool. HAPPY NEW YEAR to you too. And you are absolutely right. The waffles do freeze beautifully.
