A visitor in our potager

Look what we found on our patio at 7 a.m. on Saturday  morning. White Socks was about to burst through the window and Diva Dog was none too happy either.

Hey it's trying to get under the cloche. That's OUR salad you thief!

Guess it decided it was too much work.

A none too graceful up-and-over.

We dedicate this last photo to Aunt Debbi. Hey Aunt Debbi, we think it's a boy.

LOL, I wonder why you think it's a boy. ;-) Very nifty those cloches, don't you think? They even keep raccoons out.

Hi Wenches, ohh that thieving raccoon. We have little love for them, they have murdered our kittens in our former TN house, snatched right out of the box in the garage, coming in through the cat door. No love for them at all. I do like your cloche idea, it solves many problems, including keeping out salad thieves!

good thing he decided to find a snack someplace else! I'm sure he could have wreaked some havoc if he'd chosen to.

OMGOMGOMG. I almost choked and had to walk away for a minute. Hilarious. Your getting on the wild flower post.

Priceless! Raccoons tend to show up on our deck right about the time we get the half-barrel water garden up and running. GRRRR!!!! The poor goldfish. We finally added a clay pipe so the smart ones could take cover.

AHA! Hateful Wildlife in action...you are so smart to have thought ahead... not surprising from two such brilliant gardeners as yourselves...

Caught in the ACT !!! How cool is that ... get that little devil on a "wanted" poster ! LOL
And of course being a "boy' he is too lazy to follow through with the mission .. wink wink !
Great post ... just catching up now myself : )

Little bugger is pretty brazen, eh? Is is me or are they out in force during the day now. Over here in Magnolia (and a block off Discovery) they just walk up the sidewalk like they own the place. I still think they're cute though, but my kitchen garden isn't in yet!

He was in my yard last week--wow does he ever get around!

What a hugely healthy raccoon. If he didn't eat anything in your yard, he must be eating someone else's produce! ;-)

Hi Yolanda! Yes, the cloche saved our salad greens. It hadn't even occurred to us that we might have such a hungry visitor.

Hello Frances. Yes, my first thought was for our furries and how glad I am that they are all indoor kitties--except the little black one has been making a go for it every time I open the door. There is something over in the shade garden that seems to be calling to her.

Hi there garden girl. Yes, I'm sure he could have wiped out our spring greens crop quite easily. Instead he chose to head over to our neighbor's yard. He climbed her fence and disappeared into her backyard. I have a bad feeling he'll be back.

Hey Aunt Debbi! After we got the last photo cropped and enlarged--and we finished counting all the paws on the little critter--we knew we had ourselves a shot that you'd appreciate. We were hoping to make you snort your coffee!

Greetings ourfriendben! Our friend in NE had a similar problem with her goldfish getting eaten. She gave up on fish and built bat houses instead to keep the skeeters down.

Hi Cinj. More like a lazy thief. He just headed to our neighbor's yard. No cloche there.

Hey Jean Ann! What if it comes back? What if it brings the Mrs? What if there are BABIES???

I love the idea of a "WANTED" poster gardenjoy4me!

I'm quite surprised at how quickly I went from "cute" to "hateful wildlife" when my salad was threatened! Hey gardeness you all have more than just coons running around down there by Discovery Park, no? Was it coyotes?

So did you buy him a bus ticket out here? Thanks Anna! I'm buying him a ticket back to your place, LOL!

Haven't seen too many coons that close up but he DID look quite big and well fed to me, Shady.

What a great series of pictures you got. I see he left everything behind, including his pride :)
I hope he stays away now. They can be a real nuisance, and as Frances mentions, vicious too. We had one kill 3 of our barn cats in Dec. of '06, and wound the legs of 2 others who were lucky enough to get away. So, while we still think they look cute, we don't like to see them around our barn. At least the one we had getting into the cat food this winter didn't do damage to any of our cats.

It is a good thing the racoon did not get into the plants! Our racoons are fearless. They love to take the pump out of the fountain. Thats their favorite trick.
