Devil made me do it

Oreilles du diable / Devil's Ears

Devil's Tears

The first is a tasty and beautiful red leaf lettuce that is flourishing in our potager. So far, it is retaining a slightly sweet and pleasant taste while others are getting bitter.

The second is a beautiful new addition to our perennial hummingbird garden. Hopefully this cape fuschia (phygelius) will attract more hummers for us to enjoy.

Ooh, that 'Devil's Ears' lettuce is exquisite! Where'd you find the seed?!

That lettuce sure is pretty, and the cape fuchsia is glorious. I'd love to have them both in my garden!
We grow a red lettuce but it's a different variety.
I hope your weather has improved. We had a lovely sunny day for a nice change and I got some containers planted.
The gardens are getting way ahead of me though, after this past rainy and cold week.

Love the phygelius ~ I have a pink one this year but didn't see a scarlet or I would have bought it too! I bet the hummers will LOVE it.

On the lettuce--it is the one lettuce not started from seed. I've combed seed companies on both sides of the pond and in 3 languages and have not been able to find seeds. I'm planning on going back to the nursery and getting more info. Will post if I learn anything of use.

About the phygelius--I had been seeing a lemony yellow one around the neighborhood and had been most curious. Seems there are lots of pink/peach ones on the market this year. We're starting a new bed with reds and yellows so thought the red one would go better. They do get BIG--not as big as the Pampas grass though!

On the weather--60s during the day, hovering around 50 at night. Not sure the pepeprs and tomatoes will set fruit. Consistent pattern of "sun breaks" = overcast most of the day except for 3-4 hours of glorious sunshine in the afternoon. Possibly getting up to low 70s for the next 3-4 days.

Wonderful colors. The cape fuchia looks like a perfect flower for the hummingbirds, and the red lettuce looks delectable:).
